Guru (RIP)Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 17, 1966, Guru (Keith Elam) along with DJ Premier comprised the Gang Starr duo. Growing up, I was hooked on Gang Starr. I was in high school the first time I heard ‘Just to get a Rep’ from the album “Step In The Arena” (1991) and from that point, I just HAD to have that record and I ended up buying that and the previous album “No More Mr. Nice Guy”. Guru’s lyrics were words that spoke the truth. It crossed race, class and gender boundaries, speaking of positivity and perseverance to get ahead and make a mark in life. something he most definitely achieved through his music. I can’t even count the number of tracks that I can recite in their entirety.

I can go on and on about Gang Starr’s influence in my music but I’ll just let y’all enjoy these classic videos/interviews from Guru and Gang Starr’s early days. Rest In Peace Guru…
